(May. 19 11:00 AM) - Today in 1946, the second Broadway revival of Showboat opened at the Ziegfeld Theatre, and ran for 418 performances. Show Boat is a musical in two acts with music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was originally produced in New York in 1927 and in London in 1928, and was based on the 1926 novel of the same name by Edna Ferber. The plot chronicles the lives of those living and working on the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat, from 1880 to 1927. The show's dominant themes include racial prejudice and tragic, enduring love.

(May. 19 12:30 AM) - The Ford’s Theatre Society recently announced that the Tony Award-winning musical “1776,” directed by Peter Flynn, has surpassed revenue records to become the highest grossing theatrical production since the historic theatre reopened as a working playhouse in 1968. But due to previous commitments by the actors and Ford’s Theatre, “1776” must close tonight, May 19, 2012.

(May. 18 6:36 PM) - Signature Theatre presents the US premiere of TITLE AND DEED, a new play by Will Eno and directed by Judy Hegarty Lovett. The production, starring Conor Lovett, will run through June 17, 2012 with a May 20 opening night in The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at the Company’s new home The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street between 9th and 10th Avenues). The production is presented in association with Gare St Lazare Players Ireland. (May. 18 4:49 PM) - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences last night celebrated the life and career of legendary dancer, director and choreographer Gene Kelly on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Film clips, personal remembrances and an exploration of the technology Kelly used to change the look of dance on film were featured at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, hosted by Kelly’s widow, film historian Patricia Ward Kelly. Mr. Laurents, whose credits include West Side Story, Gypsy, La Cage Aux Folles, Hallelujah, Baby and The Way We Were, amongst many others, had a long and distinguished career, both on Broadway and in Hollywood.
